When learning English for the first time, then why not start with watching a show like Friends? No? Ever wondered why everyone loves Raymond, The King of Queens, Seinfeld, Baby Daddy, and Two and Half Men? You indeed get familiar with day-to-day common slangs and phrases. They do teach you the words that you will need in your everyday life.
After that, watch All in the Family (It is about a father-in-law and his son-in-law constantly disagreeing on social and political topics). The Big Bang Theory, The Suits, Sherlock, and, most importantly, The Crown and Taboo are all great shows to watch.
You can pick up a lot of new vocabulary from them.
On the other hand, mostly news is written in appropriate English, with proper syntax and sentence structure. The anchormen typically talk at a medium pace, for each syllable correctly spoken and also no identifiable dialect. Starting to read the newspaper might help you expand overall vocabulary.
Let’s gooo!!
Listening comprehension, vocabulary building, and even conversing are all skills that television can help English students improve. You learn to pay attention to words and phrases in context when you watch a movie, for instance.
The cinematic cutscenes help you understand unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions by providing clues. You can improve your own linguistic abilities as your vocabulary grows and you gain more exposure to native speech.
Another benefit of watching television is that there is a vast variety of interesting stuff from which to learn. Let us take a look at quite a few examples of the various series, films, and genres you can watch:
F.R.I.E.N.D.S
Friends is an American comedy series featuring six friends in their 20s and 30s. They live in the Manhattan borough (the busiest place in New-York) of New York City.
It aired on NBC on September 22, 1994, and was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television, produced the series.
Crane, Kauffman, and Bright were the original executive producers. Along with Adam Chase, Michael Curtis, Greg Malins, Scott Silveri, Shana Goldberg-Meehan, Andrew Reich, and Ted Cohen promoted in later seasons.
All throughout the season, Friends received positive reviews and became one of the most popular sitcoms of its time. The series went on for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards and won numerous awards. In terms of ratings, the series was a hit, consistently placing in the top 10 in the final primetime ratings.
Friends has had a significant cultural impact, and the Central Perk coffee shop featured heavily in the sitcom, has spawned numerous knockoffs around the world. The series still reruns all around the world, and each season has been released on DVD.
Rachel Greene, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing, and Ross Geller are the six main characters. The first episode starts with introducing them in the first season.
Rachel has moved to New York after leaving her fiance at the altar on her wedding day, and she ends up living with Monica. It is established early in the season that Ross has had a crush on Rachel since they were both in high school. Countless episodes focus on his attempts to express his feelings to her.
Impact on English
According to a research conducted by a linguistics professor at the University of Toronto, the series had an impact on the English language. The professor discovered that the characters used the adjective “so” more frequently than other intensifiers like “extremely” and “very.” Although the preference had already entered the American lexicon, the show’s use may have hastened the process. The expression “going commando” was popularised because to the show.
The Big Bang Theory
Scientists Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, and Bernadette Rostenkowski are among the characters featured in The Big Bang Theory. Penny, a waitress, and Amy Farrah Fowler a keen scientist.

If you look closely, these are the people you can take inspiration from! Add some inquisitiveness to yourself too, for the love and wisdom of science and research. And from Amy, the girls can learn not to hold back and always pursue to be prudent. To make full use of their common sense, and brains!
Penny’s social skills and common sense are juxtaposed with the four boys’ and their partners’ geekiness and brilliance for hilarious effect.
It is a great show! Not because it is only funny, but because it is witty. It is like a genius from your school who has the best personality, and always creates the ‘quality’ vibe, great discussions and not just dumb-laughter. People might make fun of knowledge and wits calling it geek, but we all know they can’t afford it!
Young Sheldon
Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory is a 9-year-old boy living with his family in East Texas and attending school. Sheldon strives to integrate into the world around him in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as his family and friends try to deal with both his gifts and his obstacles. The adult Sheldon is narrated by Jim Parsons.
A Little BTS!
On Young Sheldon, Zoe Perry plays a younger version of Mary Cooper. Laurie Metcalf, who played Mary Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, is her mother. However, Zoe was cast in the show after an audition.
Most likely because the producers didn’t want to rush into casting someone without first seeing if they were a good fit. Sheldon continues to criticise others and believes he is better than everyone else.
Sheldon grew up watching Professor Proton, who inspired him to pursue a career in science. On the show, Sheldon Cooper’s timeline begins in the fall of 1989, when he began high school at the age of nine. Sheldon is not expected to begin college until the fall of 1991.
Suits

They do an outstanding job with Harvey Specter’s portrayal! It must be the great blend of the writers’ dialogue and Gabriel Macht’s equally great acting. Throughout the show, he maintains a positive attitude that is admirable. Mike Ross is present at the same time. The child prodigy with an eidetic memory.
He can recite the entire United States Constitution because he read it in sixth grade. Isn’t that incredible? Mike isn’t a lawyer, but he understands a lot about the law, and Harvey hires him as an associate nevertheless.
In addition, the show contains numerous references to classic films. A Few Good Men, Top Gun, 12 Angry Men, Taxi Driver, and many others were among the films I saw. In addition to “Greenback Boogie,” the background music is fantastic.
Phantoms and Friends, Judgment Day, and Love and Hate are some of the best episodes and favourites.
